There is an old saying that when you have your health, you have everything. It is still very true in these modern times when we are living fast paced, high stress lives and it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a well balanced life. All aspects of our lives need to be taken care of and here are some things you can do to improve your overall wellbeing.
- Eliminate harmful habits
Our bodies can take much more when we are young, but as we get older, our bad habits tend to have a stronger negative impact on our health and more often than not, they lead to illness. No matter how much you take care of yourself, any form of self-destructive behavior will take its toll on your health. The first step to eliminating self-destructive habits is becoming aware of them, acknowledging their negative impact and making a decision to change. This can involve anything from smoking and drinking to self neglect in the form of not getting enough sleep, overworking or being in toxic relationships.
- Learn about health and vitality
If you are not well informed, you won’t be able to do what is good for you, so it is important to learn about a healthy lifestyle. It is a good investment not only for yourself, but you will be able to teach your young ones how to live healthy lives. There are many books, DVDs and free videos on the internet you can get your information from. You could attend workshops about health or take rehabilitation courses at your local community colleges to learn how to take care of yourself when you get old and health issues appear.
- Introduce a healthy diet
This is probably the most important thing you can do for your health. Eating a healthy diet is a preventative measure against many if not most diseases including heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes. According to scientific research, vegetarian and raw food diets are the most conducive to longevity and good health. Cut down or completely avoid meat, processed foods, dairy, artificial foods and drinks and increase the consumption of organic vegetables, fruit, fish, seeds and nuts.
- Take up regular exercise
Working our body cannot be replaced by anything else, so it is important to have a daily movement routine. You don’t have to go to the gym or run, there are milder forms of exercising that will keep you fit, like yoga, Qigong and Tai Chi that also have additional benefits of working on your inner balance, sense of peace and emotional stability. Simple things like house cleaning, raking leaves, shoveling snow and washing your car also count, as do your walks in the neighborhood.
Following these guidelines will not only help your body detox and function properly, but it will also create a change in your lifestyle that will lead to better mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing that is fulfilling and joyful. You might not see the results overnight, but it is a worthwhile endeavor, and you can do it!
